  Top Tips: Application Forms

When recruiting, many employers use application forms. Unlike CVs which give you some freedom on how you can sell yourself, application forms are very structured. If you want to impress an employer and make yourself stand out from the crowd, then spend some time and effort filling in the application form.

The tips below are a good starting point:
Useful tips before starting
  • Make at least two photocopies to practice on before you start completing the real form.
• Read any instructions carefully e.g. if they ask you to complete the form in black ink, then use black ink!
• Give yourself plenty of time, don’t leave it to the last minute.
Plan your answers
  • If you receive a copy of a job description with your application form, read it carefully.
• Highlight all the main tasks and skills required by the job and match your own skills and experience to these.
• If you received any information about the company or organisation read this carefully. Have a look at their website if they have one.
• In the section “Additional Information” say why you think you’re the right person for the job. Match your skills and experiences to the job. Give reasons as to why you want the job. Provide additional information that may not be covered in other sections of the form. If you need more space than is provided, attach a separate sheet.
• Emphasise your strengths and highlight your achievements. Focus on your USP (Unique Selling Points).
• State why you would like to work for that company or organisation.
Never tell lies. You’re likely to be found out in the interview or even after starting work.
After completing the form
  • Make sure you have answered all the questions. Never leave a section blank. If you feel a section is not relevant to you, put a line through it or write N/A (Not Applicable).
• Ask someone to look over your application form to check for spelling and grammar mistakes.
• Make a copy of your application form to remind you of what you’ve written.
• Write a short covering letter to accompany your application form.
• Post it in plenty of time for it to arrive before the closing date.

Following these points should make completing applications forms a lot easier.
