What is Careers Wales?

  • Careers Wales is an all-Wales service that gives people of all ages free careers information, advice and guidance
  • Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, Careers Wales was set up in 2001 bringing together six careers companies across Wales under one name.
  • Our work contributes to the Welsh Assembly Government's Lifelong Learning Agenda, encouraging people to engage in learning, skills, and career development, leading to economic prosperity for individuals and the nation as a whole.
  • As well as providing careers information and advice, Careers Wales manages services such as the Learning and Careers Advice telephone helpline, Workforce Development, Education Business Partnerships, Business Support Services, Youth Gateway and CLIC, the national information and advice service for young people aged 11-25.
  • Careers Wales is committed to equal opportunities. Our services are designed to meet individual needs regardless of race, gender, marital status, age, disability, beliefs, sexual orientation, social or economic background.
  • Our services are available in English and Welsh. You are welcome to correspond with us in English or Welsh.

How we help individuals

In today's rapidly changing labour market, with a greater emphasis on shorter and more flexible careers, it is essential to have easy access to the latest career opportunities throughout our working lives. Whatever your career aspirations may be, there is a growing need for people of all ages to change direction, update their skills and gain new knowledge.

Careers Wales can help at any time in your life – whether you need help choosing the school or college course that's best for you, want to get back into education after time away, learn a new skill to help change career, aim for promotion within your current job, or set up your own business.

  • Thinking of changing career? Want to know what you're good at or which careers would suit you? Then ask about our Psychometric and Personality Testing service for adults.
  • Our Careers Centres and Careers Shops have information about jobs, careers, courses and the local employment scene. You can also use our computers to research information using the Internet or careers software.
  • Specialist careers advice is available to those who have special needs.
  • Are you 16 to 19 and looking for work or training? We offer a vacancy service to help you find you the job or training place you want.
  • Learning and Careers Advice 0800 100 900 - phone up free for information on local and national course and training opportunities.
  • Our short Youth Gateway programme can help you if you're between 16 -19 and want some extra help and support before moving onto a college course or into training and employment.
  • Whatever your age we can help you to improve your CV, the way you complete application forms and your interview skills.
  • provides dedicated sections for young people and adults with a host of interactive tools to help you with your career plans at any stage of your life.

How we help schools and colleges

  • Our Careers Advisers work in all secondary schools and FE colleges across Wales.
  • We are committed to improving and developing Education Business Partnerships (EBP) - providing activities like work experience, mentoring, business awareness and enterprise days which prepare young people for the world of work.
  • Advising on innovative ways to deliver Careers and Work Related Education and encouraging schools and colleges to improve the quality of their provision through working towards the Careers Wales Quality Award.
  • Offering specialist guidance to young people through individual interviews, group activities and other related events.
  • Providing training and support on Careers Education and Work Related Education to staff in schools and colleges across Wales.
  • provides an online library of key documents and resources to make sure professionals are up to date with current trends.

  • Inform on the latest changes in education and training.
  • A range of tailored Business Support Services including help with recruitment and selection, Work Force Development and redundancy counselling.

How we work in partnership

  • Working with partners to develop programmes which encourage social inclusion is central to our work.
  • We work with a wide range of organisations including the Welsh Assembly Government, educational establishments, employers, Young People's Partnerships, training providers, Sector Skills Councils, CCETs, Youth Services, Job Centre Plus, local councils and the voluntary sector.
